What is human chorionic gonadotropin?
hCG is a hormone produced mainly by the placenta during pregnancy, and it is the molecule detected by pregnancy tests. It consists of two subunits: an alpha subunit shared with the hormones LH, FSH and TSH, and a beta subunit that is unique to hCG. It acts on the same receptor as luteinising hormone (LH).
